Clear treatment safety rules
Treatment Safety & Contraindications Policy
Please read this policy before requesting an appointment. It explains clearly when massage will not be provided, when it must be postponed and when medical clearance is required.
Your safety comes first. I do not diagnose medical conditions or decide whether massage is medically safe for a health problem. Where medical clearance is required, treatment will not be provided until you have received approval from your GP or appropriate healthcare professional.
Massage will not be provided
- During pregnancy, as I do not currently offer pregnancy massage
- If you have a fever, flu, an active or contagious infection, or feel acutely unwell
- Over contagious skin conditions, open wounds, broken skin or active inflammation
- If a blood clot (DVT) is suspected or has recently been diagnosed, or there is unexplained swelling, pain, heat or redness in a limb
- If you are under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs
- Following a recent operation, fracture or significant injury unless an appropriate healthcare professional has confirmed that massage is safe
The appointment must be postponed
- If symptoms of illness or infection develop before the appointment
- If you develop a new injury, unexplained pain, swelling, rash or skin problem
- If you are taking antibiotics for an acute infection
- If you have recently had surgery or an invasive medical procedure and have not yet been cleared for massage
- If any change in your health makes the planned treatment potentially unsafe
Please rearrange only when the condition has resolved or a healthcare professional has confirmed that massage is appropriate.
Medical clearance is required before booking
Massage will not be provided without prior clearance from your GP or appropriate healthcare professional if you have a medical condition or treatment that may make massage unsafe, including:
- Cancer or current cancer treatment
- A heart, vascular or circulatory condition
- A bleeding disorder or use of blood-thinning medication
- Lymphoedema, severe varicose veins or persistent unexplained swelling
- Uncontrolled blood pressure, severe osteoporosis, reduced sensation or another significant medical condition
The medical decision must be made by a qualified healthcare professional. I may also decline treatment if the clearance does not cover the requested massage or if treatment would fall outside my training or insurance.
Your responsibility and my right to refuse treatment
- You must provide complete and accurate information relevant to the safety of your massage before treatment begins.
- If relevant information is withheld, the appointment may be refused or stopped.
- I reserve the right to refuse, adapt or stop a treatment where I reasonably believe it may be unsafe, falls outside my professional scope, or where inappropriate offers or behaviour occur.
- A booking request is not a confirmed appointment until I contact you and confirm it.
